The lights are dimmed down low, the house is full of a golden orange light, the red carpet feels bigger and warmer and I’m sat in my favourite corner writing this while my chest feels like it’s going to explode from so many intense feelings.
FEAR AND EXCITEMENT
This week has been big for me, I’ve signed up to a creative writing workshop that takes place every week for two and a half hours. I received the instructions for next week’s session today too, we have to write a short story choosing one of the excerpts and also read a short story, analyse it and answer some questions related.
I’m pretty stoked but I’m also pretty petrified. Sharing your art is almost like giving someone your feelings and letting them dig in them and give their opinion and decide if they think it’s good or not. It can be very intimidating and scary but I’m now starting to think that it’s necessary for me to begin to share it to grow and learn. I’ll also learn to view my writing from other’s points of view thanks to feedback. This could be a step that will get me a little bit closer to writing my novel.
This event today has reminded me why I got “do it” tattooed on my wrist exactly where I’d see it everyday. I want to write, I want people to read what I write, I want to get better so it’s kind of a no-brainer, until the irrational fears and anxiety kick in, but then again, isn’t everyone a little “scared”?
My friend Iliana gave me something to think about, she said “not everything that you do in life will give you this feeling so enjoy it while you can” and that hit me pretty hard. Up until now, I don’t think that there have been many things that have made me feel this much in a long time so maybe that’s a sign that I’m headed in the right direction.
Talking about heading in the right direction, when I did the interview with Jesús about Tradingberry, he said that his motto was “learn by doing” and that’s the idea I’m trying to follow with this new path I’ve decided to embark on. If I write more and explore within the world of writing, I’ll be doing more and learning more and as a result - hopefully- finding my voice.
All in all, I think that all of us are a little bit scared and worried about if we’re making the right decisions and if we’re going to be ok. All I can say is that I think that we need to listen to our intuition and if it feels right, go for it. All of these worries and anxious thoughts flourish and come to life when we shift our focus to the “what ifs”. If it feels right then go for it, even if it’s a different path than what you had planned before, we change, life changes and we can’t expect for things to always remain the same because nothing ever does. Another thought to think about is that you can always decide to stop, go back or change direction. Nothing is permanent and you can try as many things as you like, that’s the fun part about life. So if you too are embarking on a new adventure or heading down a new path, first of all, congratulations! and second of all, follow your gut (it isn’t usually wrong).
PROJECTS
Last week I mentioned the BOOK CLUB 📚 which is going great! There have been about 10 new members since I started it last week and we’re going to be meeting up this week and the following to get to know each other and chat about books while drinking our morning tea or coffee. Group 1 will be Friday 15th at 10:00 and group 2 will be Monday 18th at 10:00, if anyone’s interested, here’s the link to join: BOOK CLUB LINK.
One of the members of the book club called Marina, on instagram @m__montes, has a project called BROTA (SPROUT) which is going to be a collection of texts written by different people who express a breakup of some sort (relationship, friendship, family, work…) that caused them pain and how they “brotar” - sprout - and recover from this upsetting event. Her intention with this project is to share texts from a positive and fun narrative voice.
I decided to take part in this project and for me it was a bit of a challenge to come up with a text of this kind but I’m pretty pleased with the result and hopefully my text will make the cut and I’ll be able to share it with you further down the line. If anyone reading this is also interested in writing and thinks that this project sounds cool, you can contact Marina to know more about it! The deadline to send your writing is the 20th of October.
